Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is easy at times to look at my students in their required uniforms and forget all that they face at home. However, I am quickly reminded by the seemingly inexplicable meltdown, the mention of how dad is in prison, or the child who is always falling asleep because it is too loud at home or not enough room in a bed shared by three siblings. My students come from impoverished homes and face diversity on a regular basis. They also come from Spanish speaking homes, so they do not have a foundation in English that many children come to school with.
Despite all of their challenges, my students are excited to learn and give their best to do so every day.
I love that I get the opportunity to provide them with a safe, consistent, and loving environment. While they come to me below grade level, the growth I get to see in them is all the more exciting!
My Project
Four years and over 90 students does its damage on a classroom carpet. That is certainly the case in my experience. We need a new carpet free of stains and worn out spot.
A classroom carpet is a magical place where community is built and the important lessons of listening to one another and showing respect to all are learned.
We spend a good portion of our day gathered on the carpet. From listening to a read-aloud to a Math mini-lesson to morning meetings, some of the most important moments and learning happen on the carpet. The carpet is also a time where students can spread out and lay down while doing independent writing or computer work. Therefore, it is vital for our classroom rug to fit all of us and to be comfortable. It also never hurts for it to be beautiful. This rug will fit all our needs!
The light covers will help cut out all the negative and distracting effects that fluorescent bulbs can have. All these items will help creative a cozy classroom environment conducive to learning.
