Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second year teacher who will be teaching amazing 2nd graders in the Atlanta community! My students are predominately latino(a) and are also English Language Learners.
The words "English Language Learners" and "Low Socioeconomic Status" carry a very negative connotation.
My students are labeled under these two titles in the educational world. Many people believe that students who speak two languages are not capable of learning and being successful, while I believe that using your first language benefits your second language acquisition. Being bilingual is a positive thing and these students have that wonderful asset!
My Project
In second grade we do a lot of collaborative and group learning. Students gather together as a class at least 4 times a day, for example, we come to the carpet for morning meeting, before and after a lesson, and when the school day is over. Being that our classroom is also inside a trailer our floor space is not the best so this carpet will give us the opportunity to use flexible seating as well as comfort in our room while learning.
This addition to our classroom will allow students to have an everyday resource that is in both their native and 2nd language.
My students truly appreciate the use of visuals in order to help with their learning and this resource will allow them to conceptualize a lot of information both in English and Spanish.
