The students from my school are mostly from low income families. Many of the parents have minimum wage jobs but have difficulty making ends meet and their students qualify for the free lunch program. Most of my students are from minority backgrounds. In addition many are from homes in which English is not their first language.
My students are eager to learn but their parents abilities to help them are somewhat limited by the parents' level of education.
The students enjoy being in school and in my classroom.
My Project
This donation will make a difference in my students life by providing them reading material of their own and encouraging reluctant readers.
My students are so excited to have something of their own that they can keep they can't wait until the next issue is delivered.
Many of my students come to me from households that don't have reading materials, there aren't books or magazines around for them to read. Students borrow books and magazines from the school media center and our classroom library but of course they must return them. They are amazed when I tell them these magazines are for them to keep. One of my students kept every issue she received so she could read them over and over.
These Scholastic News Magazines also encourage students who hate reading to read. I have had parents tell me the only thing their child will read at home is the magazine I send home each week! Students who are intimidated by a book will read these magazines because the magazine has colorful photographs, topics that interest them, and the articles are short enough to not overwhelm them. They don't think of it as "reading".
