Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from the largest school district in the state of Connecticut.
We are also one of the largest schools in our district.
Most of my students live below the poverty line, in environments that are not conducive to learning, and sometimes in circumstances we couldn't imagine. Even with these things going on around them, they make it to school every day and have an insatiable love of learning. The smiles on their faces as they walk through my classroom door every morning is truly what makes me come back each day.
My Project
The graphic novels and books I am requesting are interpretations of some newer superhero literature that my students have been very interested in. We have read portions of these stories in the past and my students have a very genuine interest in continuing to read how the stories pan out and then discuss them in our small group literature work. A great example is the Green Lantern series, Blackest Night/Brightest Day. This series highlights the Green Lantern Corp (A sort of intergalactic police force) but also incorporates other heroes from the DC Universe such as Wonder Woman, Batman, and the Flash. In this series, the heroes, and some villains, acquire an additional set of "powers" from a light spectrum that is based on their dominant character trait. This was a great tie in for my students, because in the fifth grade we discuss and incorporate character traits throughout the school year.
Superheroes are very popular right now especially on film and I'm trying to harness that popularity and turn it towards my advantage in the classroom.
Embracing current trends to inspire new readers is a crucial step towards developing a new generation of enthusiastic readers.
Through these interpretations and high interest stories I hope to help the children transition into the full chapter books that many of us grew up with 20 years ago. I want to take something I know they will enjoy and use it to inspire the use of their imagination.
