I am a Media Specialist for a high school in rural Pender County, North Carolina. We currently have 51% of our students receiving free lunch and 6.75% are English Limited. Being a poor county, with an increasing population, our funds are extremely limited. In addition, we have a very diverse social and economic pool of students. On a yearly basis our English teachers bring students into the school library to conduct research on mythology. Approximately 80 students from 3 classes are involved in this research project. Upon searching our available books, we discovered that these students would have a difficult time researching mythology due to a lack of books. At the present, there are not enough books for even half of the students to check out. If there were more resources for our students to check out, then the students researching would be more productive. In order to increase our collection of mythology books, we will need the titles: Mythology, The Greek Myths, Vol 1, American Indian Myths and Legends, Myths and Legends of Japan, Mythology: The Illustrated Anthology of World Myth and Storytelling, and The Oxford Dictionary of Classical Myth and Religion.
