My Students

I am teaching a Contemporary Issues elective this year. I want students to understand the world around them, especially outside of the United States. Students have expressed a huge interest in studying the economic, political, and social issues of Africa.

My students are the best!

However, their love for reading needs fostering. My students come from a variety of backgrounds in a rural small town. Attending a small school allows them to act as a family and support one another, (which is why I love where I teach!).

My Project

Through reading A Long Way Gone, students will have a book study to better understand the perplexing issues in Africa. This will parallel other issues they will research within other countries, focusing on human rights. They will apply their knowledge to solve the human rights problems that plague many countries.

Donations to this project will help build literacy within my Contemporary Issues elective.

They will have the opportunity to read a topic that they may not have exposure too. I'm hoping that they take the stories within this book and realize how truly rich Americans are and how 1 person can make a difference in someone's life.
