Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently have two classrooms; my students are in 5th and 6th grade and attend a low-income school in a large, urban district. I teach Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. My students are curious, energetic, and ready to learn each and every day!

My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.

Many of my students are English Language Learners. They come to school everyday eager to learn! Help me give my students the tools they need and deserve to grow and succeed!

My Project

A Long Walk to Water is based on a true story and it will give my students an opportunity to learn about a different culture. My current sixth graders are creative, deep thinkers that love to be challenged. As their ELA and Social Studies teacher, this novel has all the necessary components to spark interesting conversations among students.

More importantly, this will allow them to experience what it is like inside the heart and mind of a refugee.

One of my goals is that students will become more empathetic and compassionate towards others and develop more positive relationships with their peers. Also, I want them to become more aware of wasting water and other resources.

My hope is they also will become excited about learning how to get involved in projects to help others less fortunate than themselves.
