My Students

My 8th grade students are diverse in abilities, personalities, and backgrounds. Half of them are from low income homes. A third of them have an intellectual, physical or emotional disability that makes learning more difficult. However, they don't allow any of these circumstances to hinder their attitudes or work ethic.

They work to their full potential on a daily basis in an effort to reach their social, emotional and academic goals.

They inspire me with their passion for learning and creating a future for themselves. They encourage each other, work together to reach common goals, and are striving to be good citizens and community members.

My Project

Although my 8th graders have been exposed to the Civil Rights Movement before, we often study what life was like in the South in general. With this set of class novels, written by a local author, my students will be able to see how segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and the process of integration played out not only in our state, but in their hometowns.

Additionally, with the books unique form of being written in prose, all of my students, no matter their reading level, will be able to read and comprehend the material.

The references to other influential and important Civil Rights leaders and events will open the door for research projects and allow for cross-curricular projects with their social studies classes! These books open the door for intense, real world learning and application.
