In NYC a library is a mandatory part of the classroom. However, my new classroom came with very little to desire. My room is without comfy furniture and an area rug for my library. My bookshelves are falling apart and the books that were given are missing pages and have a very worn appearance. I hope to use books from a variety of genres for read alouds. Reading memoirs from the Holocaust, looking at science books, and reading a book about a familiar movie such as Holes, are all activities that I plan to do in our new library. The library will be an area that my students look forward to spending time in while learning takes place.
My classroom contains children with learning disabilities in sixth grade. These children benefit from multi sensory learning. A library provides this for each child. A colorful, inviting library with comfortable furniture will be a starting point for my reluctant readers. The books provide each child with an opportunity to teach him/herself something new. It will be an escape from their frustrating work preparing for state tests and struggling with math and reading.
I hope to have story books, information/reference books, chapter books, comic books, etc. A variety of interesting books from diverse genres and bright colorful furniture will be my starting point for each day's lesson. It is my hope that my library will be the most active center in the classroom. We spend over two hours each day working on reading and this new library will be the setting for these lessons. It is my goal to help my students develop a love of reading.
