My students need picnic tables and sun shades to make the perfect outdoor classroom in our school garden.

My students LOVE school! Every morning they get off the bus with huge smiles and are full of excitement. They hug and high five almost everyone they see. School is their safe place. You see, many of our students come from a neighborhood where poverty, crime, and drugs are very common.
As their teacher, my job is to show our students all that the world has to offer.
We believe that every one of our students can be successful. We encourage them to dream, to set goals, and to persevere when things get hard. We also strive to expose them to different experiences they don't often get to see by taking them to musicals, the zoo, or a marching band concert. Our school has various clubs such as cooking, art, and STEM that broaden our students interests and hobbies. Our students love hands-on activities, experiments, and projects. When they create something, their eyes light up! They feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. These kids are truly special!
This year our school was the recipient of a grant that created a school garden for our students to maintain. We received three planter boxes and the students have grown carrots, cabbages, radishes, tomatoes, and squash. We will be adding flowerbeds over the summer. Our students have loved learning how to be gardeners! They help plant, water, and harvest the vegetables. The students have learned about healthy eating and have also learned the "science" behind a garden and what plants need to grow.
The picnic tables and sun shades will allow for our school garden to become a true learning environment or "living classroom".
Teachers will be able to hold class outside. The students will have space to sit and write and the sun shades will allow them to stay cool. This will give students more ownership of the garden. They will learn to take pride in their school and environment by keeping their "living classroom" maintained and clean. These are lifelong skills that will help our students become better citizens in their community.
