I teach a culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged group of students in the suburbs of New Orleans. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students are entering the United States from Central American countries. My students come to school everyday ready to give their own personal best, even though they may have many struggles at home to deal with at such young ages. As their teacher, I am hoping to provide every opportunity for them to have success.
My Project
Chromebooks will help to engage my students with interactive lessons and prepare them for an increasingly digital workforce. In today's age, computer literacy is an integral component of any student's learning plan. While most of my students are low income, they do not have access to technology at home and are very eager to use it once at school. Technology in schools has been shown to engage students, not distract them as some educators had initially feared. With programs like iReady and Zearn, my students will be able to tackle the math curriculum online by using these Chromebooks. These programs have been proven to assist students in mathematics instruction, as well as with interventions when needed. Also, Chromebooks in the classroom are what is needed for some of our special needs students who cannot maintain their attention throughout the day in a traditional classroom setting.
