These third grade students love to learn! They are active, curious, and creative thinkers. In a recent art project, we were creating ice cream cone paintings to in the spirit of Jack Prelutsky's Bleezer's Ice Cream Store poem. I showed my example of a traditional cone with a few scoops of ice cream. Students created everything from root beer floats to banana splits to kitty cones. It was wonderful to see how they took the project and made it their own.
As unique as their ice cream paintings, these students differ in what helps them learn best.
They thrive on making their own choices in the classroom each day. Students direct their own learning each day by cycling through a series of whole group mini lessons and independent work sessions including read to self, read to someone, work on writing, and listen to reading. Students choose what type of work they will do in each work session. They are working on building their stamina to read and write for longer intervals on their own. The ability to choose what they will work on next motivates and inspires students to work hard and learn more.
My Project
Imagine typical elementary classroom fluorescent lights. Now add soft blue fabric panels over each bank of lights and breathe a sigh of relief. Educational Insights Fluorescent Light Filters will diffuse the harsh glare of our current classroom lighting, creating a calm and peaceful learning environment. Different seating choices like wobble cushions, floor seats, plastic rockers, Can-do therapy balls and furniture risers give students a choice of where to sit and at which height they do their best work.
In a recent classroom survey of where they like to read, students shared they preferred soft lighting and comfortable seating.
Some students like to sit or lie down and others prefer to stand. Some students like to read in corners with a mound of pillows by themselves while others want to sit near friends and move a little. This project seeks to make our classroom a little more like home by adding varied work spaces to help students build their learning stamina. When students are comfortable, they are more motivated and able to work for longer periods of time.
