This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember The Breakfast Club? John Hughes envisioned a two story school library, complete with reading rooms and card catalogs. My students have never experienced a school library like "in the movies." Our school doesn't have a library at all!!

In our urban school, the closest library is several miles (and several gang territories) away.

Now that it gets dark earlier in the day, many students are not allowed to walk several miles to and from the library to borrow books. It just isn't safe. Our school doesn't have a functional library; a fire several years ago and low budgets ever since mean that my students only have access to chapter books that are brought into the school by teachers. Bookstore? Forget about it!! A local history of riots mean that even the donut shops have bullet proof glass.

My Project

We have to help our kids. My students need a chance to read fun books. They need a chance to "choose" a book to read, to fall in love with a book, and to read exciting books that meant for teens! We would like a variety of fantasy and true-to-life chapter books to share in our own, tiny classroom library. My students have dreams of college and beyond, but without essential literacy skills (which include some extra reading!) they will continue to struggle in a neighborhood that is better known for violence than academics.

My goal is to get a book for every student to borrow by the end of 2012! You can help us hit our goal and your donation will be gently and lovingly used for years to come. We can't all live in a John Hughes movie, but you can make the difference for my jocks, nerds, princesses and rebels today!
