My students need flexibility in their classroom to enhance collaboration, teacher-student conferences, and to increase classroom space for more hands-on activities.
I have the fantastic opportunity to teach at Minetto Elementary School in Oswego, New York. My school truly steps up to the plate when it comes to being accepting of others and their learning abilities. Minetto Elementary is comprised of a variety of students with all types of learning abilities, experiences, and talents. As a teacher, I strive to provide modern and student-centered tools for these amazing kids. My school and students thank you for your support and generosity. Together, we can make great things happen!
My Project
Research has shown that students who have the opportunity to move and have a choice in where they sit improves student participation and engagement. Research has also shown that when adults are restricted to one particular area to work their level of energy and participation in their job decreases significantly. I plan on crafting my lessons around the setup of my classroom. By having these tables I will be able to walk around the room and have student conferences on a quicker basis, craft lessons that focus on student collaboration and team building, and free up a large portion of my room. I have been observing other classrooms that use tables instead of the desks and have noticed that children have an easier time transitioning from one lesson or activity to the other because they have all their pencils and writing materials located in a bin centered at each table. I really plan on having this type of setting in the classroom as we do so much! With these tables I will be able to remove a large portion of furniture that just takes up space. I am really excited for this opportunity!
If we understand that adults cannot stay focused in one spot for a short period of time, then we must realize that children should not be held to this unrealistic expectation as well.
I believe that by switching to student-centered tables my classroom space will not only increase drastically, it will also support an engaged classroom that promotes collaboration and community building.
