A Little Dirt Never Hurt!

Help me give my students raised garden beds, seeds, and garden tools. We would also like a camera to document our work, as well as microscopes to examine the seeds and the plants!

My Students

Our sixth grade is comprised of almost 40 students. Our entire district is free lunch. This is a very small, low-income/high poverty school district. Because of this fact, our students are faced with many different challenges in and outside of school. I encourage my students to be creative and try to give them experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Providing a safe and inviting classroom environment is very important for these students.

Giving my students opportunities to experience new things is very important to me. I work hard to give my students fun learning activities they can enjoy, but can also relate to. Through our classroom activities and projects, I try to give my students real world connections and let them experience things they might not otherwise be able to. While our school doesn't have a big budget for our classrooms, we do try and make the best with what we do have. It's all about the students!

My Project

With a garden there is hope! Our project is a way to get our community involved. We intend to invite community members, parents and grandparents to be a part of this project. We are hoping to get more parental/community involvement for our students and school.

Gardening is a great learning activity for teaching STEM, it works exceptionally well as a comprehensive hands-on learning tool.

This project will expand on children's previous knowledge and reinforce what children are learning in class. Gardening can also expose children to science and other STEM disciplines at an earlier age, which will increase the likelihood of them studying or working in a STEM-related field later in life.

There are no gardening mistakes, just experiments! For Science and Engineering we intend to build raised beds, plant our seeds, document our process with the camera for technology, and use our math skills a we count, proportion, measure and work on fractions.
