Wonderland Avenue Elementary school is a warm-hearted public school, with a very eclectic, committed, and dynamic staff. Though we are a part of a very large district, we are a very small school and are not entitled to Title One funds. Our magnet program attracts families from every walk of life. Many of our students are just learning English. The magnet is gifted and accelerated, which means we are mandated to teach two grade levels above the norm. Our curriculum is therefore quite difficult and the pace is quick. Imagine the stress! It would be fabulous to let my kids run around the playground after teaching them fourth grade language arts and social studies, but alas! Most of the space allotted to our canyon site has been taken by a new building, designed to give teachers like me a window (can't wait!). We teachers have a strict playground schedule. This is why I would like to have 32 yoga mats! If I could have a "class set" of mats, I could quickly and quietly have my kids unroll them in the hall and we could grab a few minutes of some relaxing stretches. We've been doing "downward dog" and the "cat" poses there already. But I am most interested in adding "dead bug," and I don't want the kids lying on the floor. Too, I think the mats will add a validity to our purpose. This is the first generation that will truly suffer from obesity. I would like to expose the children to a healthful way of fitness, relaxation and focus. With a classroom set of yoga mats, I could help my students have additional physical exercise, add to their overall well-being, and overcome the obstacle of space limitations. Oh, and I promise to share with other teachers wishing to do the same!
