I have a group of amazing and smart prekindergarten students in a reduced-class size, partial EC classroom! Most, if not all, students within my state's program are from non-English speaking homes, lack verbal-communication skills, and/or have had very little exposure to organized instruction. Prekindergarten is crucial for their success in kindergarten and other grades to follow. As a result, we use visual cues and labels all the time.
Visuals cues are so helpful when children are trying to communicate with others, and crucial for learning grade-level skills, contents, and objectives.
Children come into the classroom without the ability to express their basic needs and wants, these cues help in so many ways. In addition, everything is labeled with pictures and words in the classroom. I spend each year printing out color visual cues at the local library for a hefty fee.
My Project
The donations requested for this project include a color printer for printing colorful displays, labels for the classroom environment, and literacy and math resources for students; a laminator to extend the life of these printed resources, and a paper cutter that will help in preparing materials for student use. The donations will facilitate communication, enhance learning, and help to improve my students' competency in skills and concepts necessary for success in school for years to come. Students that are unable to communicate will have a "voice" and all students will have the resources that help facilitate knowledge and skill acquisition.
A colorful environment/work materials enhance a child's learning potential, increases productivity, has calming effects, stimulates brain activity, is associated with creativity, heightens concentration, and has shown to positively impact comprehension.
In short, consider the power of color. 80% of the brain receives information visually. In order to paint the perfect future for young children, a little color goes along way.
