My students are a diverse group, with a wide range of academic ability. All of them, at one time or another, need some additional instruction--either individually, or in a small group.
The special needs students in my integrated co-teaching (ICT) classes need access to basic classroom materials on regular basis.
Many of them lack organizational skills, and lose essential items on a regular basis.
They have a variety of learning styles and needs, but they do have one thing in common--they love to learn, to explore, and to investigate the natural world. These wonderful and curious students need the basics to keep themselves organized and prepared at all times to learn.
My Project
My middle school students do not have lockers, and they need to carry their belongings with them from class to class. Frequently, they are so overwhelmed, they don't always have the items they need. This causes many of them to become disorganized, which is an obstacle to their success. By providing them with basic classroom essentials, such as pencils, markers, and folders, they will know that our classroom is a safe space where their focus is on learning.
Special needs students benefit tremendously by having an assortment of folders that are color coded by class.
Frequently, parents neglect to buy new supplies for their children after the holidays, because they simply lack the funds to do so. I want my students to know that in our classroom, they can count on having whatever they need to be successful and complete their assignments. By organizing them in this second part of the school year, my co-teacher and I can ensure that they end the year strong!
My students can never have enough pencils, and we need a sharpener to make sure that they’re always “on point”. Color coded folders that are organized by class will help these children know what folder represents what class. Since we provide the children with differentiated materials, we need an ample supply of toner to print our leveled resources and materials to ensure they can meet the same standards as their non- special needs peers. And it always helps if they can get a water bottle after physical education class, because often, these are not provided from home. By providing them with the tools they need, I can help them improve the quality of their work, because that is their focus, not whether they have the materials, but rather, on learning.
