My Students
My students live in a rural area in Eastern, North Carolina. Many students come from single family homes or families who struggle financially. Thanks to a grant, all students Pre-K through 8th grade in our district receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Many students do not receive a great deal of instructional support at home, mainly due to busy schedules or jobs that are necessary to provide for the family.
My classroom is the place where students are motivated to explore their interests, support one another, and work as a team to ensure success for everyone.
Each morning, we greet each other as a family and work toward our individual goals together. I encourage my students to see our classroom as their second home: a place where they are safe loved, and provided many opportunities for success.
My Project
In order for reading instruction to be engaging and effective, students need to be exposed to texts that are relevant and well-written. When texts captivate the attention of students, more information can be gained and built upon.
The books included in this project work together to create a curriculum that is integrated into all subject areas and covers the NC standards necessary for success in higher grade levels.
In addition to the mentor texts, this project will also provide students with materials to enrich their guided reading instruction. Items such as binders for each student, dry erase markers, and a rug for the reading center will provide students with ample opportunities to grow as readers.
