I am so lucky to be teaching first grade at a constructivist public school. The school environment encourages authentic, inquiry-based learning. Students take charge of their learning experiences. These students love hands-on learning and asking questions. They are readers and writers. They play games and use manipulatives as mathematicians. They perform experiments as scientists. First graders are curious, motivated, and wiggly. They move about the classroom to learn, discover, and grow. Socially, emotionally, and academically, my classroom has a wide range of abilities and needs.
My Project
My first-grade students are a part of a literature-rich school and classroom. Each day is spent engrossed in books. However, many in my class are striving readers, who long to have access to more interesting, higher-level books. Providing a listening center gives my students access to books they wouldn’t be able to read otherwise.
Audiobooks provide another model of fluent reading to new and striving readers.
Following along in the text, the anxiety is removed from reading. Students can decode words they would not normally be able to decode. Following along with the audio also increases listening and comprehension skills.
I would like to provide my students with a listening center, including a CD/cassette/Bluetooth player, headphones, and audiobooks.
Please help all my students have independent access to good books.
