Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 2nd graders are some of the most eager, hardworking learners, and they are very driven to succeed. They truly love being at school. 64% of my kids are English learners and more than 80% come from low socioeconomic households.
My Project
Students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds statistically have gaps in their language, vocabulary, and reading skills. Research suggests that having repetitive, easy access to sophisticated language helps children assimilate tools for critical thinking. Listening centers are the perfect medium for providing children with such opportunities.
Hearing a book read on tape helps children focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading.
Many books on tape have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children. Help me expose my students to higher language skills, stronger vocabulary, and different genres of storytelling with the help of our very own classroom listening center.
