Help me give my students a new listening center! This project would not only fund a complete listening center, but also nonfiction and fiction books for up to four students to follow along and listen to together.
The school in which I work with serves a low-income population, in which more than half of the students are from low-income households. The school only serves Kindergarten through 2nd grade, but the amount of trauma that a lot of the students has already endured appears in the form of disruptive behaviors, attention seeking behaviors, and struggle to self-regulate.
I work with students in Special Education, teaching 8 classes most days; all having diverse disabilities that include ADHD, Autism, a Learning Disability, Intellectually Disabled, and emotional disturbance.
For most of my students, literacy skills and practice can be anxiety provoking. Unexpected behaviors or focus conditions could resist the students' learning.
My Project
The listening center is easily portable, comes with a sturdy case, and four set of headphones. There are several nonfiction books that all include multiple copies of the book and the audio CD for the listening center. This will allow students to engage in text that they are not yet able to read. Students can use the multiple copies of the text in order to follow along, assist in reading skills, and comprehension of text through discussion with peers.
This will be used mostly as a break time or reward activity, for students to have down time to assist in emotional regulation, while still engaging in books.
This can also be utilized in the small group setting as a station activity.
The texts that I have chosen are of specific interest to students due to engaging nonfiction books. The pictures in these books are photographic, detailed, which engage the students as well.
