Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The new school year is underway, and I am totally smitten by the 24 first graders who I have been blessed with. The most important lesson I've learned in my teaching career is that I can't do it alone. It takes a lot of time, energy, and love to maintain a classroom of 24 first graders. Not only from myself, but from the broader communities in which we are situated. Please help us access the support that we need and deserve!
My Project
In order for our children to grow into compassionate global citizens, we must discuss important and uncomfortable topics rather than avoiding them. I've been speaking to a number of educators, students, and families in my school community about discussing injustice with six- and seven- year olds. These conversations culminated in the creation of a "social justice book club" that will meet once a week after school. Based off the input that I have received so far, I am requesting books for our "club" that address themes of race, gender, and ability.
Many of the books I am requesting are aimed to combat bigotry and discrimination, while others feature protagonists of color simply being themselves (because that's enough).
There is currently an enormous diversity gap in children's books, and this project will help me close that gap in my classroom. Please help me build a library where my students can see themselves!
