A Library Renovation for a Classroom Transformation!
My students need an organized library with good fit book bins to give them more time to read and less time searching for books! We also need 2 more comfy floor seats.
My district has a very unique class called the Kindergarten Acceleration Program (KAP). KAP is an extended-day acceleration program to boost the acquisition of early literacy skills. KAP gives students the opportunity to preview information and build on their prior knowledge, increase background information, and acquire the vocabulary necessary to understand new concepts and skills. It is an honor to work with these children!
My class consists of 24 motivated, engaged, and excited learners!
Of those 24, four are English learners, one receives learning support, and five have speech and language services. ALL of my students strive to be members of a tight-knit class community that help each other grow from our experiences.
My Project
All students can be taught to love learning and reading. Through my 11 years of teaching, I have acquired many books in my library for children to explore. Now that they have many choices I find that they spend to much time deciding which books are the right fit for them! Through a literacy framework called the Daily 5, each student gets to pick books for their "good fit" book bin. These bins include a variety of books for students to read that span many genres.
The Daily 5 helps students build stamina, independence, and accountability that will give them a love of learning and reading that will have a lasting impact on their lives.
When picking books I have found that students benefit from a structured library. Currently, I have 14 bins in my room. In each of those bins, I have a variety of topics and students could spend an entire 15-minute rotation searching for books. I would like to expand to have over 50 choice bins with picture labels showing my KAP students what exactly is in the book bin. Some examples would be: Farm Animals, Rainforest, Tractors, Pets, Fairy Tales, TV Shows, Transformers, Pokemon, Sea Life, Pete the Cat, Eric Carle, etc.
Once they have selected their bins, these choices will last several days. The next task is for students to find a relaxing and comfortable place to read. I have a variety of textured rugs and chairs available. I would like to add 2 flex chairs to offer more engagement and excitement.
