My Students
Our school has been struggling to keep teachers. Changing to new standards and other economic pressures have had an impact on this community and, by extension, my students. My students are curious, rambunctious, and earnest.
They are mostly low income students in a predominately rural Hispanic community.
All students receive free lunches at our school. Many student have family members who used to be incarcerated at the now closed private prison. We have many At Risk student and many students's reading level is well below 7th grade, some as far behind at 5 grades.
My Project
I require my students to read independently, but I haven't been a middle school teacher before, so many of my books in my classroom library are either not the right reading level or not appropriate for middle school students. Help!
Having a library of our own, will allow students to easily change books when they have finished one.
It will make it so we can have a community of students who have read the same book, but at their own pace. It will help me find a book for each student to love. If I can get a reluctant reader to love just one book, it will help that student use that book as an anchor for later learning.
