My Students

Our classroom library is outdated and I know that not even I would want to get books from our library. My students know that our theme is "World Explorers" but we cannot explore without a library filled with books that they WANT to read.

My students live on a reservation in South Dakota.

The school they attend is beautiful and filled with amazing teachers and students. However, my students face many hardships at home such as abuse, alcoholism and poverty. Despite this, they come to school every day, ready to learn and willing to listen. Every one of my students want to go to college and want to change the reservation.

My Project

With these fiction and nonfiction books, my students and I can truly learn to become avid readers who can get lost in our books. Our class goal is to grow 1 1/2 years in our reading levels and the only way to do that is to get them to read, read, read! At the beginning of the year I asked the students to tell me the books they wanted to read because I knew our library didn't have it. They gave me the titles and now I can provide them to my students.

Many of my students want to go to college, but have no idea the hard work and knowledge required to get there.

I know that if I can get them passionate about what they are reading, they will learn to love reading and push their minds to heights they did not know possible.
