Help me give my students access to books with characters that look like them, inspirational biographies about people who have faced hardships like them, and book displays to create a welcoming environment for reading inspiration.
At our school 95 percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Our students live in a unique part of town which is isolated from resources, parks, and after school activities. Many of our parents use public transportation which makes access to outside resources challenging for them such as literacy opportunities.
The particular students who will benefit from this project all qualify for special education services and have mild to moderate disabilities.
My students are really hard workers who put 100 percent towards their learning every day even though learning is really challenging for them. They are resilient and inspiring.
These materials will give my students access to high quality literacy materials that they have never had access to before. They will be able to have access to books with characters that look like them and biographies about people who have overcome challenging obstacles. These materials will help my students have a welcoming classroom library that will inspire them to love literacy.
When my students see a book with characters that look like them their eyes light up.
These books and materials will do that. In addition, the materials through this project will allow my students do do engaging literacy projects year round.
