Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Currently I am working with 15 high-need high school students, grades, 9-12, to produce a school newspaper that reaches out to 1500 students and the surrounding community.

Over the past year 15 students and myself have worked diligently to produce 4 school newspapers. Unfortunately our technology is extremely outdated and we are doing this on 1 Acer notebook. This has limited us when it comes to design, graphics and layout, since the current computer and programs we use are very outdated and slow.

The students really need a new notebook computer that has up-to-date software and does not take an abundances of time to load pictures and graphics. The notebook computer will benefit students, in that, it will make them aware of new technology which will better prepare them for life outside of school, primarily college. This notebook will also help students learn how to better organize a newspaper, which in turn will correlate into helping them become better organized. When my students work on the newspaper they are not only learning how to properly write articles; I also use it as a springboard to teaching life's lessons of hard work, dedication, determination, organization, and working collaboratively. This notebook computer would not only help students create a school newspaper but it will also help students learn much more.

This donation will make it possible for the students to create a newspaper that is modernized and timely. It will also make them adept at using technology. Though the students are frustrated with the current technology situation, they realize there is hope. They realize that by getting a new workstation, they can produce a new, redesigned newspaper that is fresh and inviting.
