Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you tried using an old computer to find answers to your questions? Did you just give up because you cannot wait any longer? My students have had several frustrations and have wasted precious time working on our ancient eMac to research because it spends more time spinning or freezing.
Our third grade class consists of gifted and high achieving students who are enthusiastic learners and creative thinkers.
They are achievers who have set high goals for themselves this year! Being independent readers make them more curious about their environment and capable of exploring beyond the academic areas covered in class. They are developing writers who can write a five-paragraph informational text that many times is lacking in specific details due to the unavailability of sources of information.
Our school is a Title 1 school where most students receive free and reduced lunch. Although both staff and parents work hard to raise funds for the school, they don't raise enough money to replace our old computers.
My Project
Why a laptop? Having a laptop will provide numerous opportunities to achieve our gifted goals. Students can choose their own specific area of interest, do research, organize information, produce a comprehensive study, and be able to share their work using technology.
Some activities they can do include basic keyboarding, how to type addresses, how to add graphics and other text features in their work, how to choose appropriate websites, how to save work on flash drives, and how to make slide shows and PowerPoint presentations. In addition, they will be able to videochat with other students, authors, and hopefully, with leaders of the community.
Imagine having a group of students who are not afraid to think outside the box.
What research, projects, and innovations can they possibly accomplished given a computer that will facilitate their learning? The use of a laptop will encourage them to be more knowledgeable, independent, investigative, resourceful, and responsible. Aren't these the kind of students we need for a better tomorrow?
