My students need a Kindle to encourage reading skills and comprehension.

I teach students in which I would describe as "totally exceptional". I teach ambitious, yet very talkative high school students from Eastern North Carolina. I am a Special Education teacher who teaches approximately 30-45 students each semester at an urban public high school. The students I teach struggle with emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. The majority of my students read and comprehend on levels several years below their grade level and grade expectations for high school.
Like many high school age students, my students love to be actively involved in academics, sporting events, musicals/plays, band, computer science/technology, and social media.
The goals I have for my students are to become better readers and learners, to challenge themselves in school and in their communities, and to work to their full potential. My students have learning challenges, but they are collectively gifted and talented in so many other areas.
Often students identified as having learning disabilities doubt their abilities; some even think that they are not as smart as other students. I have high expectations for my students, never-the-less. I challenge them daily to study hard and try their best to succeed in their classes and in life.
The majority of the students I teach have difficulty (and continue to face difficulty) with basic reading skills and the comprehension of what they read in their classes. As a result, they do not like to read; many refuse to read. Frequent reading has a great impact on reading skills. It increases comprehension, memory, and vocabulary.
Having access to a Kindle Reader would greatly impact my students' reading comprehension and will encourage reluctant readers to read more for pleasure.
By donating to my project, you will help me encourage reading and enhance the literacy skills of my students. Let's read!
