Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In elementary school, just about every child loves to read. Unfortunately, when middle school comes around, many students lose their interest in reading for different reasons. Regardless of the reason, students NEED to read everyday in order for them to become better readers.
My students learn in a New York City middle school.
They are primarily African-American and Hispanic, and 40% of them are Special Education students. The high majority of them come from low-income households.
It has been a struggle to get them to read independently, even for as much as 20 minutes a day. One day, one of my advanced students pulled out a Kindle E-reader and began reading for a long period of time. I noticed another student peeking over her shoulder, trying to read along. Later on that day, I asked one of my non-readers to give me his opinion of the Kindle E-reader. "I've never used one, but I like them. You could read any book you want in an instant and it's fun to read the same book with a friend," he said. This gave me an idea that would inevitably reignite the love of reading that my non-readers once had...
My Project
My school requires struggling learners to spend some extra time with me after the regular school day. I'd like to start a "Kindle E-Reader Book Club" with them, where we would collectively choose an interesting book to read together. This book club would benefit my students in numerous ways!
For multiple times a week, students would be engaged in long sessions of reading. During these sessions, I'd be able to ask the right questions to develop my students' critical-thinking abilities. This would inevitably increase their reading levels! They'll be going from not reading at all to almost an hour (and sometimes more!) a day. We could read several books throughout the school year, all for a fraction of the price; E-books are much cheaper than printed books! The students would be so excited to be able to read together, and they'd be becoming better readers each and every day.
Students with reading difficulties often go on to experience mounting challenges as they get older.
One common problem with these struggling readers is they don't spend enough time reading independently. You can change that.
You could motivate students to read each and every day by putting exciting technology in their hands. You'd be helping students whom need it most-- struggling special education/low-income students. Your donation would make a difference that would change their lives.
