This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
'Playing to Learn and Learning to Play...and Growing Along the Way'. This is my motto as a kindergarten teacher. I know young children learn best though hands-on experience. I keep this in mind as I plan our daily activities, centers and room design.
My 'Caterpillars,' students, come from diverse backgrounds and range in abilities and focus levels.
They have a wide range of skills, experiences, interests and focusing abilities. As the children's primary teacher, I am responsible for all aspects of their development, both academically and physically.
My Project
Learning about plants and the life cycle of plants is part of our science curriculum. We read about them. We talk about them. We draw pictures about plants. But the hands-on learning that this project will give us will be the total learning package!
These materials will help my students develop a love for plant life and nature that will hopefully continue with them throughout their lives.
Having a variety of real plants that we will grow ourselves and other plant materials will be so rewarding for my kindergarteners. We will use the grow lamp, grass seeds, soil and knee high stockings to grow grass heads. My students will create their own grass head that they can watch grow over time in our classroom. The beta fish tank will allow us to see how plants effect other living things. The plant pocket chart will allow us to use it as a resource as we write and draw about our observations. The books about the plant life cycle will add more literature to our non-fiction library.
