My Students
My students are from a diverse Chicago neighborhood populated with English language learners, attending a public school. 100% of my students qualify for free lunch. A variety of cultures are represented, languages spoken, and ideas shared within my classroom. Through hard work and dedication, my students continue to overcome obstacles, meeting and exceeding grade level expectations.
My inquisitive middle schoolers are growing up in a city brimming with inequities that they need to be able to think about critically and proactively.
Through relevant novel studies and research, we work together to develop the skills needed to meet the state standards and use this knowledge to affect positive change. I take pride in the responsibility my students feel for their own educations.
My Project
Help make research come alive and bring a Kids' Market to our school for the holidays. Research skills are some of the most valuable areas of practice for middle school students heading into high school and beyond. Unfortunately, research has a bad rap as being boring and intimidating. The Kids' Market aims to change that.
Students will practice researching to develop a brand, make a product or service, create a marketing strategy, and follow a finance plan.
But, this research isn't just for their teacher to read.
This research unit helps students direct their passions into their own businesses to share with the school community during our one-day Kids' Market. These materials will allow my students to set up their very own Kids' Market in a professional way that will make them feel proud and capable as well as engaging to the school community. Students will plan the market for our elementary community, sharing their talents and creations with families looking for extra special gifts for the holidays or to enjoy a social evening out.
