Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a Family and Consumer Science teacher and work in an urban school. Over 60 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Due to this, my students often have few opportunities to travel and experience other cultures, traditions, and foods.
Exposing students to cooking techniques and cuisines from different cultures can open up the world to them and inspire students to pursue careers in the food industry.
My "Foods of the World" class students are made up of eleventh and twelfth graders. The class is a student centered, hands-on learning experience that promotes group work.
My Project
The students in the "Foods of the World" class learn about the geography, history, culture, traditions and cuisine of different countries. The vast majority of my students have not had the opportunity to taste food from many other cultures. In fact, when last years class attended this field trip, not one of the students had an authentic German meal. Attending a luncheon at an authentic traditional German restaurant will bring German food to life for them. It will also allow the students the opportunity to practice table manners and social skills that they will take with them into their careers. Some of my students are considering careers in the food industry, so this is a great way for them to see firsthand how different businesses operate.
Allowing students to experience authentic cuisine and talk with the chefs that are preparing it gives the students real life connections to what we are doing in the classroom.
