My students need engaging and research-driven vocabulary materials. I am very excited to use "Mrs Wordsmith" to build their vocabulary and boost their literacy.
My 2nd graders are sweet, generous, and curious young people. I am very grateful to work with students who are multilingual and represent diverse backgrounds.
"Ms. P, I think that's a 'fish out of water!' Is it?...I think it is!" After our lesson on idioms, all of my students were so excited to share with me their interpretations of 'the cold shoulder' or 'a piece of cake.' It didn't matter that some students were not fully grasping the concepts right away - the whole class laughed and enjoyed that lesson.
I hope the "Mrs Wordsmith" materials will help my incoming students make similar joyful connections in English Language Arts. I want them find the English language engaging and humorous right from the beginning of the year!
My Project
Our journey of a thousand words...begins with you! This box set from Mrs Wordsmith includes everything my students need to learn 1,500 data-driven words related to narrative storytelling. The word categories are Character, Weather, Taste & Smell, Action, Emotion and Settings. This fits nicely with our existing curriculum and will become part of our literacy routine.
As a school, vocabulary has come up as an area of high need for our scholars.
Many of my students are also English Language Learners. How exciting that my 2nd graders could be learning words like "colossal," "drenched," "glimpse," and "soothing" with these highly engaging materials!
I know the visuals in this box set will capture my students' imaginations and sense of humor (they were illustrated by the artists behind the Madagascar movies)! I will use them daily to introduce new vocabulary for students to use in writing, in their oral language, or to notice in texts. We will hang the posters around the classroom, use the word pairing and synonym activities, and play games with the word cards.
