I'm a teacher at a low income school in rural South Carolina. My class has recently taken over a coffee shop at our school. My students who run the coffee shop are a group of 6th grade students at our school with a variety of disabilities. The students disabilities range from Learning Disabilities to Autism. The students who are a part of the Palmetto Perk Coffee Shop are hard working, dedicated, and driven. The students work hard to serve coffee and hot chocolate to teachers, staff, and students at our school. My students have amazing attributes regardless of the fact that majority of these students come from low income homes and struggle to find school enjoyable. My students are so impressive and make a difference not only in the school, but the community as well.
My Project
The Palmetto Perk Coffee Shop helps teach my students life skills as well as build their self esteem. This will allow me to teach my students who are lacking these skills not only the skills, but how to be held accountable and the functions of a job as well. The money will be used to k cups (two different brands), individual hot chocolate packs, cups to serve in, tops for our cups, stirrers, and different flavors of creamer. Each product bought ensures our success of running the business. The coffee shop is open for all students at our school to visit as an incentive. Teachers and staff also visit the coffee shop or come to hang out and work during planning.
