Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love creating anything with clay! At the beginning of each year, the first question I hear from many of my classes is, "Are we doing clay this year?" I am an art teacher in a public elementary school. I teach over 600 students in one week. Over the past 10 years, our community has become increasingly diverse. Currently, 30% of our population is Spanish speaking. Many of my students struggle to communicate with their teachers and peers on a daily basis. For many, the one time all week long that they feel successful is in art.
I would like to introduce my students to the history of bead making. From Native Americans to Venetian glass, bead making has been a part of our culture for thousands of years. Through making beads, students will learn about texture, color, and pattern - some of the key elements used in art. My Spanish speaking students will be able to create beautiful jewelry that they can wear themselves or give as a gift.
The problem is, the glazes and bead making supplies are out of my budget range. We have faced major budget cuts this year and with the number of students in my school, it is impossible for me to provide glazes for all of my students to use. When regular tempera paint is used on clay, it does not provide a strong finish and the clay breaks easily after it is sent home.
Your help will ensure that my Spanish speaking students will feel successful and be able to create something beautiful that they can keep for many years to come. Thank you!
