We are attempting to build a classroom library, and the students are choosing books that they want to read or thinks someone else would want to read to create a culture of love for reading books again. Students have created and submitted their own "MUST Read" book list choices to me (Mrs. Jones) and we are asking for the most "requested" books in sets of two or three. We believe that if students are reading the same book, it encourages even the most reluctant readers to want to read a book they can talk about with a friend.
"I believe each of my students must craft an individual reading life of of challenge, whim, curiosity, and hunger..."- Penny Kittle .
Giving students books they want to read and allowing time in class to read is important in creating a love and an addiction for reading. In addition, having students read "together" creates a common goal to not only read but share what they are reading and it creates an atmosphere to converse with each other about the book they are reading- what they like, don't like and how the book
My Project
Kids need to fall in love with books that they can see themselves in. Books written by authors such as Alan Gratz, Jason Reynolds, Nic Stone, and Angie Thomas. By putting these books in our classroom, it gives kids access to multiple books with diversity of different genres that they can read with a partner. Kids will read if we give them something GREAT to read.
My students chose these books that THEY are interested in reading to add to the classroom library in hopes to not only keep them reading but future students as well.
They are realistic and historic books that resonate with them today. If kids can see themselves in books, they can see themselves overcoming and achieving these obstacles in their own lives today.
They want to read good-no GREAT books that reflect them!
