Help me give my students doll house furniture and multicultural family characters to play with a doll house that a retired teacher recently gave our class. Allow us to add multicultural baby dolls to the pretend play area.
Sometimes in the quiet moments at the end of a tiring day, I find myself all alone yet bursting into laughter. I teach Pre-K. Our class is comprised of 16 precious and hilarious four and five-year-olds. I was fortunate to be selected to start my small town's first state Pre-K four years ago. The program has been so popular that in this short time we have grown to include 3 units at our school enabling us to serve all in our community who want to attend. Our students are diverse and talented. We are part of our local elementary title school.
One Friday afternoon a student told his mother, "Mrs. Carter said something bad at school today... She said that we can't come to school tomorrow." I believe this quote epitomizes what we are trying to achieve in our Pre-K class.
We hope to create an environment that is so interesting and loving that students want to come. Our students are exploring their abilities and are learning to respect the abilities of others. Parents have told us that their children bring our transition routines home, recommend our anger management strategies, and practice manners that we celebrate. They are listening.
My Project
Pretend play is a vehicle through which children internalize the world around them, participate in spontaneous communication, and socialize. Playing with multicultural characters in a familiar setting will build respect for commonality with classmates. My students are young so in our small town many enter school with limited significant experience with individuals who look differently than their family. This set will help students be more comfortable with differences. We want our students to see every other student as a potential friend. Our dream is that they carry this value as a meaningful part of their lives. We want our students to practice playing with and loving those who look different.
