Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My PPCD, FLS, PK, Kinder, and 1st grade students love their library books - sometimes to death! But, they are still learning how to care for their books and having a "special home" for their books helps them to take better care of their books, keep up with them, and return them to the library.
My students are inner-city students in a low-income, second language speakers.
They seldom have books at home or even access to the public library due to language barriers and fear of authorities. Therefore it is imperative that they have access to books from the school library for home reading. Their homes are usually low on space and high on bodies, making book care a challenge. Without the bags, my students often misplace books, drop them in a puddle on the way home, or the books get torn up by pets and younger siblings.
I have found from previous experience that having a "home" for the books (a simple tote or drawstring bag) helps protect them and helps students keep them together and easy to find in crowded conditions.
My Project
These Decorate-Your-Own Tote Bags will help my “little ones” keep their books easily accessible for reading at home which is imperative to their success in all content area in school and in a career later. The bags I have chosen are also "decorate your own" totes which will make them even more special. The students also love the idea of a "home" for their books. I tell them, "take you book out, have a nice visit with it, and then put it back in its home". They will learn responsibility and respect for their books.
They will learn literacy skills; the love and respect of books; and ,the love of reading.
Siblings reading together creates a more supportive atmosphere at home. This experience improves reading skills for both parties. Older children improve their oral reading skills and younger children improve their listening/reading skills. Also, without books from school and a way to keep up with them, a beautiful bonding experience between siblings would be missed.
