Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-grade teacher at a historically under-served k-8 school in North Portland. 100% of our school is registered for free and reduced lunch, and we have overcome many obstacles together over the years be it from lead in the pipes or gearing up for state testing.
Despite this, our parents are traditionally extremely involved and love our community.
We are one of the most diverse elementary schools in all of Oregon with over 16 languages spoken by our just under 600 students. My 25 amazing students alone speak 6 of these languages. They are an amazing crew, but we could use some help.
My Project
Currently, many of our traditional desks and chairs are beginning to fall apart. The school has been exhausting resources to pay for out of date seating that has been proven to have negative effects on the backs of young people. Wobble chairs are better for all students but especially better for my pupils with ADD and those who are on the autism spectrum. Some of my smaller students also have trouble picking up chairs or are hurt when they fall from the broken chairs. Flexible learning easels would make the small spaces that we have to teach with manageable for all students.
Many of my students come from traumatic backgrounds, and before they can begin their academics, they need to feel focused and comfortable.
My other third grade teachers and I need to make their classrooms a second (or in some cases, only) home. That is why the fun seating, pillows, and movable items will be perfect for them. This way they can move around and be kids, while readying themselves academically, and for the modern world. Because many of our water fountains were found to have lead, making sure each child is hydrated with clean water is so important and helps fulfill their basic needs. I chose these water bottles specifically because other thin, plastic-capped water bottles easily spill or are destroyed in the span of a single day. These bottles would allow them to fill up at a clean water fountain then walk to class, ensuring that they get to be part of all of their lessons for the rest of the day.
