I am the Teacher Librarian for a near inner city high school (grades 9-12) located just outside the city limits of a major city in Washington State. The school campus has successfully transitioned from three small autonomous high schools to one consolidated high school. We have a very diverse student body with a high poverty level. Approximately 200 of the students are not native English speakers, and approximately 120 students are special education students with a wide range of disabilities. We also have a free and reduced-price lunch rate of over 75%. Additionally, we have added a Dual Language (Spanish/English) program to our school this year.
Let's finish the year on a high note with one last project (yes, I'm retiring in June)!
Books like Disappeared (from the YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults), Firewall (Quick Picks list) and Erased (Great Graphic novels list) populate this list, as do some series fill ins.
Also on the list are books from the Voices of Youth Advocacy Perfect 10 list (their very highest rated books for the year). These are book students have been requesting and I'd like to finish off the year with one last batch of excellent quality reads that will live on long past my tenure here.
