I am an eleven year veteran teacher at a Title I school in an older part of the town that I live in. My students are hardworking and driven. However, we often times lack up-to-date resources that are thought provoking and intriguing. Most of these students will be the first in their families to go to college or into the military. Several actually want to move away from home in order to see what else is out there for them.
The school is ninety-nine percent Hispanic and they come from low socioeconomic households.
We are in a military rich town and community, and my students get to experience some of their family members join one of the armed forces as opposed to going to college. My students and I work together to see the world through different lenses and not just within a few square miles of where our school is located. I prepare my students for college, technical jobs, the military, and, overall, the real world.
There is still an important place for such classics as The Odyssey; however, students oftentimes get bogged down with the language and the structure of a classical text. Gareth Hinds has created a beautiful graphic novel that will help my students visualize the Hero's Journey while reading his blend of art and storytelling of this epic tale.
Graphic novels are becoming an integral part of any modern day English classroom.
I am not afraid to share this particular medium with my students, because Homer's lessons and themes will still capture the attention of my kiddos. As Odysseus makes his way back to Ithaca, we will see and read the challenges he is faced with and he is able to overcome obstacles just to get back home. The journey Odysseus takes may different than the paths people take today, but the symbolism of his success still rings true for those determined to try to make it.
