My Project

I would like a class set of the book, Miles Morales by Jason Reynolds. This is the Spiderman story with a socially current and relevant spin. The protagonist is an urban Black-Latino boy who questions his calling to be a superhero because he does not fit the traditional mold of a superhero. This is a story of self doubt, fighting against great odds, and societal pressures and expectations; but ultimately, finding our inner strength and value.

The author poignantly communicates how being a "superhero" would be a fundamentally different experience for a Black kid.

Aside from the challenges of fighting villains, he also has to deal with the challenges of racism and poverty. This novel shows that being a black superhero isn't the same as being a white one.
