A Healthy You Starts Now! Lifetime Fitness Activities
Help me give my students gymnastics mats, sports cones, agility ladders, beanbags, foam balls, soccer/hockey goals, pinnies, stop watches and a throwing accuracy game.
My students come from the largest district geographically in the state. I teach physical education to all elementary students in the Park Falls Elementary School. Students range from 4YK students to 5th grade students. Each student gets three sections of a half hour of physical education in a rotation. We have students that range from all socioeconomic statuses, and two different communities. We are a combined district between Park Falls and Glidden, WI. I teach all of the Park Falls students in all grades as well as the 4th and 5th grade students that come down from Glidden. In our Glidden campus, all students receive free and reduced lunch. At our campus, 63% of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program.
My Project
For the 2019-2020 school year, our class sections decreased from three sections of fourth grade and three sections of fifth grade to two sections of each one. Fewer sections mean more students in each class with the same budget and not enough equipment for all of my students. We are in a very high poverty area with little funding due to the sparsity of students in our district.
My students are the most important thing and they deserve this.
We are focusing on fitness this year and each of these items will help us achieve our goals of being healthier and happier individuals. We all realize that developing lifetime fitness habits starts when the students are young. My goal as an educator is to introduce multiple fitness components and activities to my students each year in hopes that the students each find at least one activity that will help them become happier and healthier individuals as adults. Physical activity helps contribute to our students' mental health. In our area, mental health is a huge emphasis in creating a community of well being.
Physical activity is so important to me and I am instilling this in my students. It is my second year in my district and my students really started to grab onto these healthy habits also. These items will help students to be healthier individuals. We will have mats where the students can work on abdominal work as well as gymnastics moves during a tumbling unit. The cones will help me to mark off boundaries when we utilize the outside field due to small confinements and large class sizes in the gym. Most of the other equipment will be used in various activities throughout the entire year!
