This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a middle school in a large city. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and supper. My students are amazing and eager learners, and I want to help them become successful, happy adults.

Most of my students are from the local area.

They have chosen to follow a marine science and environmental studies pathway for their middle school years. English is a second language for many of them. Their parents encourage them to learn as much as they can, while supporting the teachers any way they can.

My Project

My students need lunch while on an overnight field trip to the University of California in San Diego, Scripps Aquarium and Sea World. We start the day at UCSD getting the college experience: dorms, classrooms, activities. Then we head to Scripps Aquarium to meet with scientists and scientist in training (university students). We also tour the facility, seeing one of the best collections of Sea Horses and Leafy Sea Dragons any where and then we eat lunch.

Many of the students struggled to pay for food at home and are on the free breakfast/lunch/dinner program at out school.

Asking them to pay of their food on this trip would be impossible for most of them. Later, we get back on the bus to Sea World where my students know that some of the organisms we will see can only be seen at Sea World. Fortunately, the overnight part of this field trip at Sea World includes three meals.
