Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 20 kindergarten students are excited about learning. They love being able to use their hands to create projects, and to get a little messy!
Our Title I community school has a high mobility rate, where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch.
We have so many different cultures and languages at our school, because my students live in the International District. We have resources for our families that can help to provide basic needs, such as food and clothing. Parents are also able to receive free classes to get their GED or to learn how to speak English.
My Project
I have previously requested gardening supplies for a class size of 13 students. I now have 20 kindergarteners that have such a love for hands-on learning. With the supplies requested, all of my students will now be able to participate in the growing of our community garden vegetables. As a part of a Project-Based Learning unit on gardens, my grade level is growing vegetables to make a salad by the end of the school year. They will learn where food really comes from, how to take care of plants, and how important it is to nourish their bodies with healthy food.
Since my students live in an urban area, they really have no clue as to where food actually comes from.
They think that it all magically appears in their home, or at the store down the street. By getting their hands into the dirt, and to observe and care for plants, they will learn that food is grown in farms and gardens. They will be so thrilled to eat the food by the end of the school year that they will want to continue to grow their own plants.
