When you meet my students, you will find them to be funny, inquisitive, and eager to learn. Of course, a few are talkative and tend to dominate conversations as much as they can get away with. Others are kind and compassionate while a small number struggle with some negative behaviors. All in all, they are good kids with tons of potential.
My students need the opportunity to learn skills and strategies to grow academically and socially.
They often struggle to solve conflicts with their peers and they tend to lack self-confidence when faced with challenges. My students also vary at levels of maturity which creates friendship problems.
My Project
Upper elementary students often have struggles with tangled emotions, a lack of self-confidence, and fears about growing up. They tend to verbally express themselves in negative ways and end up suffering negative consequences. They usually lack coping skills and seem to flounder when facing difficult decisions.
I want to teach my students to develop a growth mindset and use mindfulness to challenge their myriad of emotions while growing academically and socially.
My students need to develop skills and strategies that will support confident decision-making and enhance their perceptions about themselves. By reading the books I have chosen for this project, my students will learn about growth mindset and mindfulness.
In growth mindset, a low grade is not regarded as “I failed! I can’t do anything right!” Instead, a student will learn to say, “I need more practice before I master the material! I will keep trying!”
My students will use the ideas behind mindfulness to learn acceptance of others and how to be more compassionate. With mindfulness, students can also dive deeper into building relationships with their families and friends.
We will use the poster board and markers to make posters for our classrooms and hallways to constantly remind everyone to strive to do their best and never give up!
