Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very enthusiastic about reading. They are in my mythology class, which is an elective. There are 26 students total and when the year began they were worried about the amount of reading that I was going to require of them. However, once we started with the 12 Gods and Goddesses of Olympus, they were hooked on mythology. They love the drama of Zeus and his infidelity.

We've now reached a point where the majority of students volunteer to read first, and volunteer multiple times after they have already read for the day.

They have expressed interest in reading solely, because of the content.

My Project

We have read the first book in the Percy Jackson series and the students absolutely loved it. These were mostly timid readers and by the middle of the book, they were all volunteering to read. This was the first full length novel for a lot of them and they want to continue the story of Percy Jackson. The second book would nurture their new found love of reading and continue to push them read books that are appropriate to their age and reading levels.

The students have expressed their connection to these books and characters due to them being the same age as most of the heroes and protagonists.

They experience similar struggles and triumphs in their everyday lives both personally and academically. So please, lets help these students continue down this positive path and give them a healthy outlet and connection to media.
