My students are high school students studying both academics and a trade of their choice. Our school ensures both student academic success and career technical education mastery, as well as promotes enthusiasm for lifelong learning. My students come from different towns and different areas, thus they are very diverse. My kids come to school each day ready to work.
My students are willing, intelligent, mindful, curious and ready to learn!
My goal is to make them see that reading is fun when you have the right book!
My Project
In an attempt to get my junior and senior students to appreciate and hopefully LOVE reading, I need some high interest books! Often times I see my students putting their heads down, skipping class, or disengaged. Many of my students don't want to be involved in reading because they "hate it"- mostly because they are at risk and struggling readers.
By being able to give my students paperback copies of a novel and play - one we can physically flip through pages together - will make all the difference and hopefully help them to see that they CAN read.
When I ask my students to read, I hear moans and groans, and see minds drifting and disengaged. My juniors are exploring the themes of: the American Dream, freedom, equality, justice, compassion and values. What better novel to teach that than "The Great Gatsby"?! My students are often disengaged, especially when it comes to reading. Being able to teach a classic novel that we can connect to today's society will help me to show them that reading MATTERS! My seniors are moving into a focus based around drama. When students hear "drama", they think Shakespeare and vivid images of not understanding what they are reading come to their mind. When they hear drama, they imagine themselves struggling and immediately disengage from the lesson and material. My goal is to show students that there is\\are contemporary drama that can connect to their real life! My hope is to re-engage students and by teaching novels and plays that are relevant to them and their lives I hope to see less students skipping class because they are intimidated by reading and gain some confidence to participate and READ!
